Two Worlds - 14 Days Nature,
Culture and History of Honduras Day
1 Welcome in San Pedro Sula. Transfer to your hotel followed by a
dinner in a typical restaurant. Overnight in San Pedro Sula. Day
2 Early
morning overland transfer to
Copán Ruins. We will stop at the town of La Entrada to visit the local
marketplace. Driving through beautiful countryside we'll reach Copán
Ruins. In the afternoon we'll visit the local small museum. Before
dinner you may enjoy the environment and atmosphere of Copán Ruins.
Overnight in Copán. Day
3 After
breakfast we visit the legendary Archaeological Park of Copán,
consisting of two main sites: the ruins and the sepulchers. Enjoy the
impressive 63 step stairway with over 2,500 hieroglyphs and the
masterfully carved stelae. We return to town for a brief meal,
continuing on our tour to site Las Sepulturas, a residential and burial
site of the Mayan nobles. Overnight in Copán Ruins. Day
4 En
route to the Yojoa Lake, we will tour the town of Santa Bárbara,
renowned for the colorful baskets and panama hats produced by local
cooperatives. Lunch in Santa Barbara before continuing to the Yojoa
Lake. Lake Yojoa, due to it's elevation and geographical location,
attracts the greatest concentration of birds in the country, migrating
birds from the North and South American Continents, as well as native
species from the lowlands and the cloud forests visit the area
periodically. About 400 of 700 species registered in Honduras live
around this lake. Overnight in a nearby hotel. Day
5 Transfer from the Lake Yojoa to La Ceiba. En route we visit the
Lancetilla Botanical Garden near Tela. The
garden possesses an impressive collection of trees and plants from all
over the world. We'll walk on trails leading through the Bamboo Forest,
the Orchid collection and the nature reserve harboring more than 240
species of birds. Continue to La Ceiba for overnight. Day
6 In
the village of Sambo Creek we will have an encounter with the Garifunas
of the Atlantic coast. Well traveled visitors will notice a number of
similarities between the Garifunas and traditional west African
societies. Enjoy a meal prepared by the inhabitants, or a dip in the
blue waters. The afternoon is free for discovering the hidden beauties
of La Ceiba, as for example the Butterfly and Insect Museum with it's
impressive collection. Overnight in La Ceiba. Day
7 Early
morning flight into the Moskitia. The small town Palacios is located on
the border to the Moskitia. It is the meeting point between the
indigenous and mestizo communities. Here we will board a motorized canoe
which locals call a "tuk-tuk". We cross the huge Ibans Lagoon
to reach the community of Playitas. Here we start our hike lasting
approximately 1 hour to the Misquito village of Kuri. In the afternoon
leisure time to enjoy the village's beautiful beach. Overnight in Kuri. Day 8 After breakfast we will board our boat which will take us from Kuri to the Pech community of Las Marías. Going up countercurrents along the banks of the Plátano river. Along the way we will observe various ecological changes between the tropical lowlands and the low tropical forest. Brief stop for lunch. At late afternoon we will arrive in Las Marías. Typical dinner. Overnight in Las Marias. Day
9 Las Marias is the last and furthermost community of the Río Plátano
Biosphere. In the heart of the jungle, we will observe plentiful
wildlife on a hike through the tropical rain forest surrounding the
community, in the company of our guides, the Pech. After the hike, we
will return to the community for lunch, with leisure time to interact
with locals or bathe in the river. Typical local dinner and overnight in
Las Marias. Day
10 Early in the morning we say goodbye to the Pech and return to the
Caribbean village of Kuri. During the boat ride we will admire the
exotic birds sighted along the way. After lunch enjoy the unspoiled
beach. At nightfall we will take a dugout canoe to explore the mangrove
lagoon close to Kuri to observe crocodiles. Typical local dinner and
overnight in Kuri. Day
11 After
breakfast we walk back to the community of Playitas where our "tuk-tuk"
waits to bring us to Palacios. Flight from Palacios via La Ceiba to
Roatan. Welcome at the airport followed by transfer to you hotel located
direct at West Bay Beach. Overnight in Roatan. Day
12 The
West Bay of Roatán is pure Caribbean. Enjoy a day of sun and fun on the
beach, engaging in various activities. Your hotel is located on one of
the most beautiful beaches on the island, just footsteps from the fringe
reef. The white, sandy beach invites you to relax or to snorkel in the
blue, crystalline waters. Overnight in Roatán. Day
13 Full
day of leisure. Enjoy your last day on this beautiful Caribbean Island
under a palm tree where soothing ocean breezes caress your skin. If your
looking for activities try a horseback riding, hike around the many
nature trails or rent a trip on the bottom-glass boat. Overnight in Roatán. Day
14 Morning
flight from Roatán via La Ceiba to San
Pedro Sula on time to connect your international departure
flight. End of program. Services
